Rare Plant Surveys

MNR has built a reputation for finding and documenting rare flora over the past decade, primarily in Minnesota. We take a simple approach of thorough due diligence and this has led to a proven track record of success.  Our project experience covers all four of Minnesota’s ecological provinces and has led to the documentation of over 400 populations of 84 different species of state-listed vascular plants. Successful location and documentation of botanical resources began with MNR’s very first project in 2006 and continues today.

Our botanists are additionally on the MN DNR list of approved rare plant surveyors in addition to the lists for specified species including Moonworts/Grapeferns (Botrychium/Sceptridium), Prairie Bush Clover (Lespedeza leptostachya), Dwarf Trout Lily (Erythronium propullans), and Western Prairie Fringed Orchid (Platanthera praeclara).

MNR is the only botanical company actively working in both the Superior and Chippewa National Forests. The opportunity allows MNR’s botanists to do what they do best. In the Chippewa alone, MNR botanists have the highest success rate finding rare plant populations, including: the first populations of Upswept Moonwort (Botrychium ascendens), Crenulate Moonwort (Botrychium crenulatum), Bog Adder’s-mouth (Malaxis paludosa), Snailseed Pondweed (Potamogeton bicupulatus), and Hidden-fruit Bladderwort (Utricularia geminiscapa) along with two species of lichen: Fringed Moon Lichen (Sticta beauvoisii) and Angular Beard Lichen (Usnea angulata).
